Combining nutrition with mental health

Kia ora, I’m Deirdre — a New Zealand Registered Dietitian with over 20 years of experience, with specialist training and experience in mental health. I help people develop a healthier, more compassionate relationship with food and their bodies while supporting their overall wellbeing.

Many people I work with feel stuck in difficult patterns with food — such as emotional eating, cycles of restriction and overeating, body image struggles, or feeling overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice. My goal is to help you move away from rigid dieting and toward a more balanced, sustainable way of eating.

Helping you get past your barriers

My practice combines evidence-based nutrition with psychological therapies, particularly Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care. I am currently in the final year of a Postgraduate Diploma in CBT at the University of Canterbury.

I have a special interest in supporting people with weight concerns, disordered eating patterns, eating disorders, and body image challenges. I also recognise that our relationship with food is often connected to other aspects of life and wellbeing. This may include experiences of stress, anxiety, low mood, chronic pain, panic, social anxiety, health anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, or phobias.

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and practical. I enjoy getting to know my clients and understanding what matters most in their lives. Together we explore your goals and develop strategies that feel realistic and tailored to your circumstances — supporting you to make meaningful changes at your own pace.

I aim to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported, while building the skills and confidence needed to move forward.
